Santa Cruz prosecutors issued an arrest order yesterday against Evo Morales for terrorism and armed uprising. If executed, he would be the second Latin American former president heading to prison in 2026, alongside Nicolás Maduro, whose New York trial already has a date. Both were political partners of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The count I ran and did not see anywhere: three historic leaders of Sao Paulo Forum parties now face open criminal cases. Plus: the prosecutor who signed the charges against former Sinaloa officials now runs all U.S. intelligence, and Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment before the Senate.

What happened yesterday, in plain terms. The Santa Cruz Departmental Prosecutors Office issued an arrest order against former president Evo Morales. Prosecutor Brayan Melgar signed it, based on article 226 of Bolivia Code of Criminal Procedure. The alleged offenses: armed uprising against state security and sovereignty, terrorism, attack on transport safety, criminal association and public incitement to crime. The case stems from road blockades that paralyzed Bolivia for seven weeks, between May and June, with a single demand: the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz. The order instructs police to bring him before the Specialized Anti-Corruption Unit.
He denies it, and his answer goes here. Morales rejected the charges and called it political persecution: he said they seek to blame him for social mobilizations to hide the country economic crisis. He added they will not intimidate him. He retains the presumption of innocence. This order adds to another case against him for alleged aggravated human trafficking, in which a court had also ordered his arrest.
The man who hosted the continental left now has his own country police instructed to bring him before a judge.

The count I ran and did not find anywhere. I gathered the open files against the historic leaders of the parties that make up the Sao Paulo Forum, the network grouping the Latin American left since 1990. The result: three leaders, three criminal cases, all live in 2026. Nicolás Maduro, of Venezuela PSUV, detained since January 3 with trial set for June 1, 2027 in the Federal Court for the Southern District of New York on narcoterrorism. Raúl Castro, of the Communist Party of Cuba, indicted by the Justice Department on May 20, 2026 in the Southern District of Florida, seven counts over the 1996 downing of the Brothers to the Rescue planes. And now Evo Morales, of Bolivia MAS. All three deny the charges.
Where Morena fits, precisely. Morena also belongs to the Sao Paulo Forum. And here one must be exact: there is no criminal case against its leadership. What exists is different and public: the names New York federal prosecutors made public in April, among them former Sinaloa officials and a sitting senator, plus the files still sealed. That is the difference between a fact and a hypothesis, and I mark it on purpose. But the regional pattern is a fact: López Obrador international partners are falling one by one, and not through elections.

Evo Morales and Nicolás Maduro were Andrés Manuel López Obrador two closest international allies. Mexico received Evo in 2019 on a presidential plane. Both are now heading to a courtroom, and neither by the electoral route. That is what changed in the region: turnover stopped being the only accountability mechanism, and the criminal file became the other one. Anyone with pending accounts before foreign prosecutors should read this twice.
Evo Morales, Nicolás Maduro, Raúl Castro and every person mentioned retain the presumption of innocence. The charges described are accusations by authorities not resolved by a court. An accusation is not a conviction. There is no criminal charge against Morena leadership and this paper does not assert one.

The prosecutor who charged former Sinaloa officials in New York now runs U.S. intelligence
Jay Clayton was confirmed as director of national intelligence by 51 votes to 47. He came from being U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, the office that opened the Mexican files.

The fact. The Senate confirmed Jay Clayton on Tuesday as director of national intelligence, 51 to 47, without a single Democratic vote. Clayton was until now U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, and before that chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission. He replaces Bill Pulte, a housing official with no national security experience who held the post on an interim basis. The appointment opens the door to renegotiating Section 702 of the foreign surveillance law, which lapsed in June.
Why this matters to Mexico, and here is the point. The Southern District of New York is the office where the drug trafficking cases against former Mexican officials were built, and where the Sinaloa names were made public in April. It is also the court handling the Maduro case. The prosecutor who ran that office just moved to the chair that coordinates every U.S. spy agency. It changes no file by itself. It changes who knows those files from the inside and now has access to classified intelligence.
The man who signed the indictments now sits where it is decided what gets investigated.

For months I have documented that the most serious Mexican files are cooked in New York, not in Mexico City. That knowledge just moved up a floor: from the prosecutor desk to the center of the intelligence community. For anyone exposed to those files, the implication is simple: the information no longer lives in a courthouse alone.

Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment and answered not a single question
He appeared under subpoena on covid origins and Wuhan funding. For nearly three hours he invoked his right against self-incrimination. He testified more than 200 times in his career. Yesterday, nothing.

What happened. Anthony Fauci, who led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases until 2022, was subpoenaed before the Senate Homeland Security Committee. He read a statement and from then on invoked the Fifth Amendment to every question, including one about the color of his tie. He said he did so on his attorneys advice and that answering could expose him to a politically motivated prosecution. He accused committee chair Senator Rand Paul of having an obsession with seeing him charged.
The substance. The institute Fauci led awarded funds that reached, through an intermediary organization, research on bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, in the city where the first cases were detected. Paul holds that his notes show he concealed evidence supporting the lab leak hypothesis. Fauci has said that research was not dangerous gain-of-function work. There is no definitive proof of a lab accident, and no natural origin pathway has been demonstrated either. That is the real state of the scientific record, and it is worth saying plainly.
An official can be right and still owe an explanation to the public that paid for the research.

Invoking the Fifth Amendment is a constitutional right and does not equal guilt: that must be said clearly. But there is a political consequence that cannot be covered up either: the man who asked millions to trust health authority decided to answer nothing to the authority that summoned him. The lesson for any government is the same in Washington as in Mexico City: public trust is built by answering uncomfortable questions, not by avoiding them.
Anthony Fauci has not been criminally charged and retains the presumption of innocence. Exercising the right against self-incrimination is not evidence of responsibility.

The Sao Paulo Forum now has a U.S. chapter, and they say so themselves
The Democratic Socialists of America are associate members of the Forum since 2023. Their own magazine published it. They went from 5 thousand to more than 120 thousand members and won over 35 primaries.
The data, with the exact source. In April 2026, the official publication of the Democratic Socialists of America wrote that the organization takes part in the Nuestra América initiative as a member of Progressive International and as an associate member of the Sao Paulo Forum. It is not anyone accusation: it is their own text. The application to join the Forum was approved at their 2021 national convention.
The scale of it. On July 4, 2026 they announced passing 120 thousand members, declaring themselves the largest socialist organization in U.S. history, above Eugene Debs Socialist Party, which reached 113 thousand in 1912. A decade ago they were about 5 thousand. More than 35 candidates they backed won primaries ahead of the November elections. Their platform proposes drafting a new constitution, abolishing the Senate, replacing the president and the Supreme Court with authorities chosen by Congress, and abolishing the immigration agency.
The same network grouping Morena, the PSUV and the MAS now has a chapter winning primaries inside the United States.

Here is the symmetry nobody is pointing out. While the Latin American partners of the Sao Paulo Forum fall before courts, its U.S. chapter grows and wins elections. The network is not dying: it is changing neighborhoods.
